Why open a third pillar 3a?

The third pillar 3a enables you to fill any pension gaps to maintain your lifestyle after retirement. Since your pension from the first pillar (old-age and survivors' insurance) and the 2nd pillar (occupational pension) usually only covers 60% of your current income, the 3rd pillar gives you the opportunity to reduce or even close this so-called pension gap.

When can the pension assets be withdrawn in Corneeer3?

An early withdrawal of pension benefits is permitted particularly in the event of the termination of the pension relationship for one of the following reasons:
  • You receive a full disability pension from the Federal Disability Insurance and the risk of disability is not insured;
  • You would like to use the pension capital for the repayment of shares in a tax-exempt pension scheme or for another recognised form of retirement provision;
  • You have terminated your previous self-employed activity and take up a new self-employed activity of a different kind;
  • You want to buy or build a house for your own use;
  • You would like to acquire shares in a residential property for your own use;
  • You intend to repay mortgages.

What are the differences between a banking third pillar account and an insurance third pillar account?

A banking third pillar account differs from an insurance third pillar account mainly for the following two reasons:
  • Flexible contributions: it does not require regular deposits and allows you to deposit as much as you like up to the maximum annual limit.
  • Availability: affordable without insurance components, ideal for those who want to maximise their retirement savings while enjoying greater freedom of management.

An insurance third pillar account includes an insurance component providing cover against, for instance, disability or death, although subject to constraints on contributions. It is less flexible than a banking third pillar account because it requires fixed, regular contributions, and imposes rather high early exit costs.

How to choose between a traditional third pillar account and a fund investment account?

The choice between a traditional third pillar account, such as Cornèr3, and a fund investment account depends on risk tolerance and return objectives. If you are looking for security and stability, the traditional Cornèr3 account is ideal as it offers greater capital protection. If, on the other hand, you are willing to risk more in order to achieve potentially higher returns over a long-term horizon, investing in funds may be the right choice.
